Nassau, Bahamas - The following is a statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell:

I am truly saddened this morning at the death of Vernon Curtis, a great civic leader, activist, businessman and community organizer from Exuma. He will truly be missed.

Mr Curtis was of that generation of Exuma who fought for independence, majority rule and Bahamianization. He was Exuma's eminence grise and protector of its history, it's traditions and it's reputation. He leaves  a great legacy. He was a supporter of the cause  and helped to elect and counsel many an MP. I am grateful for his life of service, for his friendship and for his wise counsel and total  dedication to Exuma  and the Bahamas.

May he rest in peace.
