NASSAU, The Bahamas – Minister of Labour and National Insurance, and Minister of the Public Service, the Hon. Shane Gibson deemed it an historic occasion with the opening of the Consumer Protection Commission Centre on Thursday, April 28, 2016

Although it was “soft opening,” the event was touted symbolic of the Government’s commitment to protecting the rights of consumers.

“We strongly believe that consumers deserve to have someone who will stand by their side, who will protect them and ensure that they are treated fairly,” said Mr. Gibson who addressed the opening ceremony of the centre.

The Consumer Protection Commission Centre is located on East Street South next to the offices of the Teachers & Salaried Workers Cooperative Credit Union.

Also present were: CEO of the Consumer Affairs Commission in Jamaica, Dolsie Allen; Chairman of the Consumer Protection Commission, Senator the Hon. Jerome Gomez and members of the Consumer Protection Commission Board; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and National Insurance, Nicole Campbell; Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and National Insurance with responsibility for Consumer Affairs, Alphaeus Forbes; Senior Civil Servants and other guests.

“I am excited to be here with you, today, as we open this state-of-the-art Consumer Protection Commission Center,” Mr. Gibson said.

The center will serve as the headquarters for the staff and members of the Consumer Protection Commission, and a place of relief for consumers.

The minister noted that for more than a century, the popular slogans, 'The Customer is King,' and 'The Customer is Always Right,' have inspired service professionals and businesspersons from around the world to make customer satisfaction a top priority. In today's 21st century, these informal rules have not changed.

“In fact our Consumer Protection Commission has embraced the motto 'Consumers First,' which is indicative of its mandate, which is to provide a forum where affected consumers can receive relief and redress for matters that may have adversely affected their purchase of goods and to receive some compensation for adverse services,” he said.

The Consumer Protection Commission was established by legislation in 2006. Its functions are to advise the Minister on consumer issues, establish and introduce standards in relation to the consumer protection policy, bring relief to consumers who have been adversely affected, to educate consumers on their rights as consumers, amongst other things.

Chairman of the Consumer Protection Commission, Senator Gomez and the support task, have the “mammoth task” of protecting the interests and fundamental rights of our nation's consumers.

The Commission will also assist consumers in making informed financial decisions, as well as assist consumers in taking more control over their economic lives.

“By working every day to protect consumers we will help create a more resilient economy and stronger Bahamas,” Mr. Gibson said.
