NASSAU, The Bahamas -- President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Francesco Rocca, led a delegation to visit the storm ravaged communities of Abaco on Friday, September 20, 2019.  Joining the delegation was President of the Bahamas Red Cross Society, Mrs. Terez Curry.

A press conference was held following the visit, at Odyssey Aviation.  Mr. Rocca said what they saw in Abaco was 'shocking' and 'unprecedented'; however, he believed that the Red Cross, along with other agencies, were ready and willing to assist in the recovery process. He said that while the task at hand was a daunting one, he was impressed with the way that the government has been handling the process.

"Based on what we saw, we know that the work is going to be difficult, but this is what we do," said Mr. Rocca. This is not a sprint, but instead a marathon and we know that it will not be easy but we are prepared to assist our Bahamian colleagues in this process."

He said that while his team was ready to assist, they are only here to support the Bahamian team and will not be leading the charge.

He also said that they hope they can make the recovery process of The Bahamas a model one, which can serve to assist others in the future.  Chief among the objectives, is water sanitation, which he said is an immediate concern.

President of The Bahamas Red Cross, Mrs. Terez Curry sent out an appeal to the public for assistance.

"We are in need of volunteers and supplies, both monetary and otherwise," she said. "For those who may wish to donate, you can do so by calling us, visiting us at our headquarters on University Drive or visiting our website."
