Eight Mile Rock, The Bahamas – George “Jimmy” Smith, a popular businessman from Sea Grape, is the new Chief Councillor for West Grand Bahama Local Government District. Percy Charlton, Chairman of the Eight Mile Rock East Township is the Deputy Chief.

Mr. Smith is also Chairman of the Eight Mile Rock West Township. He was sworn into office following elections on Thursday, June 26, at the Government Complex in Eight Mile Rock by Administrator Mrs. Brenda Bullard-Colebrooke.

Unlike the City of Freeport, which elects persons directly to the Council, the West Grand Local Government District comprises four Townships, namely, Pinder’s Point, Eight Mile Rock East, Eight Mile Rock West and West End.

The Chairman of each Township is automatically elected to the District Council, while each Township vote to send an additional member, except for Eight Mile Rock East, which sends two people in addition to the Chairman.

Others making up the nine-member District Council are: Ms. Ann Russell, Chairperson for the Pinder’s Point Township, Mr. Philip Smith, Chairman for the West End Township, and Mr. Simon Lewis, Sophia Dean, Sandy Thompson, Andrea Hepburn and Keithtora Young-Munroe.

While swearing in the new Councillors and Town Committee members, Administrator Colebrooke told them they have taken up a challenge by offering to serve their community and country.

“You have offered yourselves to be a part of this process of bringing government closer to the people. You have obligated yourselves to ensure that you know what Local Government is and how it operates to ensure that you are able to get the most out of it for those who have sent you to serve.

“I am certain that all of you would have familiarised yourself, indeed armed yourself with the knowledge of the Local Government Act, its amendments and supporting documents. If not, why are you here,” she asked.

She told the gathering that if they don't know the Local Government Act they are obligated to learn it in order to successfully navigate the system.

The make up of the various Townships are as follows:

Pinder’s Point Township – Ann Russell, Chairperson; Linda Russell, Deputy Chairwoman; Simon Lewis, Councillor. Making up the board are Mr. Cleveland Simmons, Mary Ann Bonaby, Lorna Knowles, Anthony Bain, Joseph Russell and Majorie Darville.
