  NASSAU, The Bahamas – The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, continues to urge residents, particularly in low-lying areas to do all they can to safeguard themselves, families and properties from impending dangerous flooding from Hurricane Matthew.

ALERT #45 ON HURRICANE MATTHEW ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY FRIDAY 7TH OCTOBER, 2016 AT 6AM EDT.

… EYE OF DANGEROUS HURRICANE MATTHEW MOVING PARALLEL TO AND JUST OFFSHORE THE EAST COAST OF FLORIDA…

A HURRICANE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS.  THIS INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF ELEUTHERA NEW PROVIDENCE, ANDROS, THE BERRY ISLANDS, BIMINI, ABACO AND GRAND BAHAMA.

A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE BEING EXPERIENCED OR EXPECTED OVER THE MENTIONED ISLANDS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

AT 5AM EDT, THE CENTER OF HURRICANE MATTHEW WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 28.2 DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 80.0 DEGREES WEST OR ABOUT 65 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF CAPE CANAVERAL FLORIDA, 145 MILES NORTHWEST OF FREEPORT GRAND BAHAMA AND 275 MILES NORTHWEST NEW PROVIDENCE

MATTHEW IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 13 MPH, AND THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TODAY.  A TURN TOWARD THE NORTH IS EXPECTED TONIGHT OR SATURDAY. 

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 120 MILES PER HOUR WITH HIGHER GUSTS. MATTHEW IS A CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE WIND SCALE. ALTHOUGH SOME ADDITIONAL WEAKENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS, MATTHEW IS EXPECTED TO BE A POWERFUL CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE AS IT MOVES NEAR THE COAST OF FLORIDA. 

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 60 MILES FROM THE CENTER AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 185 MILES FROM THE CENTER.

SMALL CRAFT OPERATORS IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT.

THE NEXT ALERT ON HURRICANE MATTHEW WILL BE ISSUED AT 9AM EDT FRIDAY
