NEMA to hold Northern Bahamas Disaster Conference

NASSAU, The Bahamas - The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), is facilitating the 2014 Bahamas Disaster Management Knowledge Exchange from September 23 to 25, at the Meliá Nassau Beach Resort on Cable Beach.

The three-day conclave under the theme: “Be Disaster Aware! Building Disaster Resilient Communities”, is in keeping with NEMA’s continued focus on properly preparing the islands to face any disaster, which may occur.

The Knowledge Exchange brings together Local Government representatives from the islands in the Northern Bahamas namely Abaco, Andros, Bimini, The Berry Islands, Grand Bahama, New Providence and Exuma.

Purpose of the Knowledge Exchange is to provide the Island Administrators and other elected officials with an opportunity to focus exclusively on disaster preparedness.

Funded by the U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM), this is the fourth event held to provide an interactive environment in which professionals from the United States and The Bahamas can exchange ideas and information related to effective disaster management programmes and techniques.

The Hon Phillip Davis, Deputy Prime and Minister of Works and Urban Development will deliver the Keynote Address at the Official Opening Ceremony on Tuesday, September 23 at 6pm, at the Meliá resort.

Captain Stephen Russell, Director of NEMA and Lisa Johnson, US Chargé d` Affairs will also address the opening ceremony.

The Knowledge Exchange focuses on response operations and includes the following presentations: “Effective Disaster Management” by NEMA Operations Officer Gayle Outten-Moncur and Dr. Erin Hughey Pacific Disaster Center Director of Disaster Services; “Lessons Learned: Typhoon Haiyan,” Dr. Hughey; “Hurricane Iselle,” Mr. Michael Chatman, PDC; and “The Current Status of Ebola” presented by Dr. Gerry Eijkemans, Pan American Health Organization.
