NASSAU, The Bahamas -- Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie declared at the Radio Bahamas 80th Anniversary Church Service on Sunday that when ZNS started broadcasting on East Street, in 1936, it was the start of a real change in The Bahamas.

"It was a small beginning, but it was one of significance for the people of The Bahamas because, for the first time, communication was made possible and people could share in news, entertainment and other public announcements, thus bringing the modern era into people's living rooms and elsewhere," Prime Minister Christie said, during the service at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, on Baillou Hill and Wulff Roads.

Also present was the Minister of National Security, with responsibility for the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas -- of which ZNS is under, the Hon. Dr. Bernard Nottage, as well as management and staff members of ZNS in Nassau and from Freeport, Grand Bahama, and other stakeholders.

Prime Minister Christie said that he joined with Minister Nottage in congratulating past and present staff members -- and those still to be hired -- for the "extraordinary" work that has been done and will be done.

"The most significant unifier in our country is the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas," Prime Minister Christie said. "That is the role you have played since your existence and it is the role that you continue to play."

Prime Minister Christie reminded the staff of ZNS of how important they are throughout the islands of The Bahamas and how many people are reliant upon them, especially in times of natural disasters, as made evident during Hurricane Joaquin in 2015.

"ZNS, Broadcasting Corporation, you loom even much more importantly than you may even think, as to the role you play in this country, and it is, sometimes, a question of life and death," he said.

He added that programming on ZNS could assist in nation building by sharing information and public policy to the Bahamian audience on various topics, including fighting crime, especially amongst young people.

"It is significant because the young men, in particular, who are out there, they are victims when they kill; they are victims when they are killed; and that is happening to us all too often and we must continue to 'gird our loins' in the struggle ahead," Prime Minister Christie said. "And I believe that the Broadcasting Corporation can play a very significant role in that way, that being able to show that crime does not pay, to be able to tell young parents -- young mothers -- that they have a responsibility to look at their children and to know that their children may not be doing the right thing."

Prime Minister Christie admonished the management and staff of ZNS to wear loosely unfounded criticism, as they play their continued role in nation building. He encouraged them to seek after truth and to continue to do research and analysis in their programmes. He also recognized a number of former employees who went on to further take part in making The Bahamas a more successful country.

"I want to congratulate you on 80 years," Prime Minister Christie said. "I want to feel that, as you move into the future that you would serve your country magnificently."
