NASSAU, The Bahamas – The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) in association with Hodder Education Publications officially launched the only primary Mathematics text book series published in association with MOEST during a ceremony at SuperClubs Breezes on Thursday, March 23, 2017.

The Mathematics series for grades one through six is a public/private initiative that was coordinated by Senior Education Officer Dr. Joan Rolle and a team of curriculum officers and teachers from independent and public schools.

In addition to being “culturally relevant,” Deputy Director Serethea Clarke said the books are “aligned with the revised primary mathematics curricula, and problem solving, critical thinking and mental strategies are encouraged throughout.”

She said the content also allows for “cross curricula linkages, which will reinforce key concepts learned in other disciplines.”

The Hon. Jerome Fitzgerald, Minister of Education, Science and Technology emphasized that the book launch is critical because there must be a connection between what is taught to students, what they learn, and what The Bahamas represents.

Minister Fitzgerald said he anticipates seeing improved results as an offshoot and consequence of the books.

He noted the sustained increases in English Language of more than 30% for Grade Learning Assessment Tests (GLAT) results were attributed to revamping of lower primary curricula and emphasis on literacy at the primary school level.

“That is not correlating in the Mathematics area. I hope that this will be a big step in ensuring that Mathematics improvements will keep in line with our literacy, language and comprehension that can stand as a basis and foundation for when they [students] get into the lower level of junior and senior high,” he said.

He congratulated the efforts of the team and expressed appreciation for the work that has been put into the series.

During the ceremony Gerald Cash Primary School’s Choir, led by Joy Rolle, delighted the audience with a performance entitled “Let’s Do Math.”

Participants included Joelynn Stubbs, teacher at C. W. Sawyer Primary School; Robert Sulley and Clare Symonette, Hodder Education; Diontalay Turnquest-Rolle, Eva Hilton Primary and Dr. Joan Rolle.
