Freeport, Grand Bahama - Minister of State for Grand Bahama, Senator Kwasi Thompson encouraged young campers to harness their gifts and talents to be, not just the best in The Bahamas but the best in the world. He was one of the speakers at today’s closing out of Royal Bahamas Police Force Summer Camp at Calvary Temple.
The ceremony ended six weeks of fun, activities, learning and games for hundreds of children throughout Grand Bahama, in three districts – West, Central and East.
Minister Thompson thanked the Royal Bahamas Police Force for giving the kids an opportunity to experience something new and to create new memories in their young lives.

“I would really like to thank the police for putting on this positive camp,” Minister Thompson said. “There are many young people in the Bahamas, whose first introduction to a police officer was not a good one. It was one where they were getting into trouble and the police had to come in and deal with them.
“But I’m happy to say that we have hundreds of children whose first experience with the police is a positive one. This is true and real crime prevention. Because if we really want to see our young people thrive and be successful, this is the time to do it, and this is the perfect way to start.”
He told the campers: “The message I want to leave with you today is that whatever your talent is, whatever your gift or ability may be… I want you to strive to be the best in the world at what you do.”
Minister Thompson said the six-week summer camp had been successful and he thanked the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Giving the keynote address, President of the Senate, Senator Katherine Forbes-Smith, used her own life as an allegory to let the youngsters know that no matter one’s environment, success is still possible with discipline and hard work.

She noted that high school and college helped to develop her mind; and playing sports allowed her to travel around the world and see it differently: “My point to you campers is to take advantage of your talents and gifts, they help you see the world differently and your life takes on a different perspective -- before you know it, you’re a leader in your community and, like me, you rise to positions, like President of the Senate.
“I did not wake up one morning and decide that I wanted to be a senator or its president, but I appreciate that the decisions I made about my education and participation in community service may have prepared me for where I am today.
So my advice to you today is to take advantage of attending camps like this because the experiences will help to develop your mind.”
