Nassau, The Bahamas -- Integrating synergies to strengthen regional labour relations would assist the Organisation of American States (OAS) Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) accelerate establishing Equal Opportunity Employment for women, youths, the disabled, mature adults, and the elderly.
Minister of Labour an National Insurance the Hon. D Shane Gibson on April 16 opened the Technical Preparatory Meeting of the 18th Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labour (IACML) at the British Colonial Hilton.
"As Ministers and Senior Public Officers of Ministries of Labour throughout this hemisphere, I'm sure you will agree that we play a critical role in our quest to provide a myriad of services to our people. Your presence here today is a testament to your unwavering commitment to the core values and fundamental principles of rights of work to the ILO and the Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labour," said Minister Gibson.
"With your technical expertise and that of the Secretariat of the IACLL, I am satisfied that we will be fruitful. We will have fruitful and beneficial meetings and that will serve to strengthen the ties that bind us together as we endeavour to improve the lives of our people throughout the hemisphere."
The delegates attending the workshops represent 26 different countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. They gathered to identify key lessons learned and policy recommendations to promote labour inclusion of the most vulnerable populations, marginalised or discriminated against in the labour market.
"Your work during the next several days will benefit considerably the work of the Ministers of Labour later this year in Colombia. And I congratulate the working group, chairs and co-chairs, as well as the Secretariat for the hard work you continue to do," said Minister Gibson.
The Minister gave delegates a brief history of the national landmarks to see in the country's capital city, starting with the Hilton, which sits on the site once occupied by Fort Nassau, which protected the western entrance of the Nassau Harbour in the 19th Century.
Mr Gibson invited the visitors to explore the boundaries within the City of Nassau, which has access to all historic sites and tourist venues, including the Fish Fry on Arawak Cay.
Minister Gibson listened to other presenters explain that the OAS have identified specific objectives for the workshop, such as to analyse the various institutional arrangements that Ministries of Labour are implementing to improve labour inclusion and combat discrimination of the most vulnerable populations in the labour market. They have also identified and discussed best practices in promoting and increasing labour inclusion of the most vulnerable populations, in addition, placing emphasis on initiatives that expand social protection among them.
