FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – If you are a high school student living on Grand Bahama Island and concerned for the safety of all road users, you now have an opportunity to say what you feel.
The Grand Bahama Road Safety Committee announced Wednesday an Essay Competition on the topic: Making Our Roads Safer for All Road Users.
The deadline for entry is March 10, 2016 and the competition attracts grades 10 to 12 students. Entry forms may be collected from all high schools on Grand Bahama.
The essay must be an original document by the submitting student. Also, the student must be attending a high school on Grand Bahama Island. Prizes will be presented to the top three finishers, and these prizes include a floating trophy, cash, I Pad and Lap Top.
The top three finishers will also be required to present their Essay at a specially-called meeting arranged by the Grand Bahama Road Safety Committee.
Chairman of the Grand Bahama Road Safety Committee John Fraser revealed during the press conference at the Department of Local Government that in 2015 there were more than 900 accidents that occurred on the streets of Grand Bahama.
“However in 2016, the Grand Bahama Road Safety Committee in conjunction with the Road Traffic Department, the Grand Bahama Port Authority and the Royal Bahamas Police Force Traffic Division are hoping to reduce that number with several planned initiatives targeting drivers, pedestrians and school children,” he stated.
Mr. Frazer also informed that some of the initiatives will include the continuation of their Courteous Driver Award, school visits, town meeting, Radio and Television interviews, and special activities like the essay competition.
He also stressed that with the introduction of another roundabout on the streets of Grand Bahama concerns have been expressed to the Committee by motorists as to the proper use of roundabouts.
To that end he said the Committee in conjunction with the Grand Bahama Port Authority, Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Bahamas Road Traffic Department are also expected very shortly to launch a campaign about the proper use of roundabouts.
The Committee has also teamed up with the Bahamas School of Defensive Driving and in the coming weeks will launch a Driver’s Ed Afterschool Program in the High Schools on Grand Bahama.
That Program will target students in the 11th and 12th Grades and focuses on teaching the five keys of defensive driving along with a series of techniques designed to reduce accidents, thereby making the roads safer for all.
