Nassau, The Bahamas - The Ministry of Education Scholarship & Educational Loan Division (SELD) is pleased to announce that the 2019/2020 Scholarship Season officially opened on December 1, 2019. All qualified individuals are advised to complete an online application via SELD's website, scholarshipsbahamas.com. Applicants are invited to apply for one/all of eleven scholarships offered. They are as follows:

  • All Bahamas Merit
  • National Merit Scholarship
  • National Academic Scholarship
  • National Technical Scholarship
  • The National Tuition Assistance Scholarship
  • OAS Scholarship
  • Gerace Research Award
  • Public School Scholars Programme
  • The Student-Athlete Resources and Support (STARS) Programme
  • The Student Athlete Track & Field Grant
  • The University of the West Indies Tuition Subvention
  • Candidates are encouraged to visit the website to familiarize themselves with the criteria required for each scholarship.
Since the launch of SELD's extensive public relations campaign during the last academic year, there has been an increase in the number of government scholarship applicants. The Division has gone from 5,000 general applicants in 2017/2018 to 5,666 in 2018/2019. Of those candidates, 3,356 (72%) were from New Providence, while the stats of family island recipients showed a marked improvement of 1,094 (24.58%) total applicants.

The Scholarship Division seeks to provide even more Bahamian students with a multiplicity of opportunities to pursue the careers of their dreams by establishing the necessary networks through local and international partnerships. Accordingly, the Division has secured relationships with approximately 30 international colleges and universities, and it is anticipated that this number will expand as discussions with numerous North American colleges and universities are ongoing.

The aim is to propagate communities of young people equipped to embrace tertiary education in hopes of them becoming globally competitive citizens.

Hence, the Scholarship Division admonishes potential applicants to peruse the criteria for scholarships offered, and to adhere to the stipulated deadlines. Additionally, the public is advised that completion of an application does not automatically qualify one for a desired scholarship. All applications are subject to the review and sanctioning of the appointed committee.

For more information on the scholarships available or to connect with the Division please visit us in person at our office on Shirley Street. Applicants may also call us at 242 502 9025; visit us online at www.scholarshipsbahamas.com or visit us on Facebook or Twitter.
