Nassau, The Bahamas – ‘Baa, Baa, Black Sheep, Have you Any Wool’ and ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’ are just two of the many nursery rhymes that the toddlers recited during the Department of Education’s Literacy Fair Wednesday, April 10th.

The students and their teachers, representing 26 government and 2 private pre-schools in New Providence, assembled on the courtyard of Willard Patton Pre-school for a day of fun and learning, one of the activities in recognition of the 15th Annual Pre-school Week.

Ellen Rodriguez, Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, officially opened the fair. She said the “fun-filled” day is focused on developing the “whole” child.

“Literacy is one of the areas that we usually highlight because we realize it is sometimes a weakness for children at the higher level,” said Ms. Rodriguez.

She underscored the importance of building literacy skills to help students become successful in reading.

This year’s theme, ‘A Walk Through the Bible’ was incorporated in some of the activities that the children engaged in, some of which were bingo, musical chairs, balloon pop, word hop, sports and movies.

On Thursday, April 11th the preschools will participate in a Costume Parade and Road March beginning at Willard Patton Pre-school.

Pre-school Week will end with a Teacher’s Luncheon on Friday, April 12th at the Warwick Hotel.
