 Nassau, The Bahamas-- Education and training will be at the core of economic reform and national development in The Bahamas going forward.
“Our broad goal is training for transformation,”Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon.Hubert Minnis saidWednesday in his inaugural national address.
Prime Minister Minnis said more than 12 years ago, the World Bank set out to determine what makes some countries wealthier than others. He said what they discovered was “most surprising.”
“When they added up the value of the natural resources such as oil and minerals, all the value of the buildings, the houses and the factories, all the valuable agricultural land, they found that something large was still missing in explaining the difference in wealth between nations.
“What was missing was obvious but they did not expect it to be so large. Their conclusion was that rich countries are largely rich because of the skills of their populations and the quality of the institutions supporting economic activity. In other words, it is not things that make countries wealthy, it is the people.”
Prime Minister Minnis said he and his colleagues are committed to bringing about positive change in the country – particularly for its young people.
The Prime Minister said Bahamian youth successfully showcased their athletic talent during the Sixth Commonwealth Youth Games (held July 18-23, 2017 in New Providence).
“I wish to congratulate our athletes who performed so well at these Games including those who won medals in their respective sports. These young people and their coaches represent the best of who we are. They represent what we should aspire to be in the pursuit of excellence.
“I want to ensure that The Bahamas maintains the dynamism and capacity and provides the resources and guidance for succeeding generations of young people to secure their dreams and aspirations,” Prime Minister Minnis continued.
“This is my hope. This is my solemn obligation as Prime Minister for all of the people. Let us begin together, a new era of reform and transformation as we approach our Golden Jubilee as a country.
“I ask for your prayers and support in the months and years ahead,” Prime Minister Minnis added.
