 In his presentation of the Budget in the House of Assembly on May 25, 2016 Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie announced that there will be a nationwide survey of vulnerable areas of the country to assess scope and location of challenges, be they health, housing, or employment to assist in formulation of socioeconomic intervention.
He said: "In the period ahead, we will undertake a nationwide survey of vulnerable areas of the country, to be conducted by Urban Renewal using, as field workers, employees of the job and apprenticeship/training programme that I am announcing today.”
That survey will, over a three-month period, perform a detailed examination of households to assess the challenges that they confront -- be they in respect of health issues, housing, employment, etc., Prime Minister Christie said.
"The concrete results of the survey will be made available to the Bahamian public and will serve to supplement the other data that are currently available to policymakers," he said. "That, in turn, will assist in the formulation of effective socioeconomic interventions by the Government to the major challenges confronting the citizens of our nation."
As for reforms in the education and training areas, Prime Minister Christie said, his Government has introduced new standards for high school graduation and established the National Training Agency, as well as the STAR Academy for the most vulnerable in Bahamian society.
In the last Budget, Prime Minister Christie noted his Government provided $20 million for training and apprenticeship programmes aimed at the at-risk unemployed youth in our country.
"The provision of effective social services is also vital to the well-being of our citizens in need," he said. "To that end, we have modernized our programmes in this area with the introduction of modern debit cards to improve the delivery of social assistance and we have implemented the RISE programme to link assistance to positive behaviour."
