NASSAU, The Bahamas - The Bahamas’ first player to participate in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Waltiea Rolle paid a courtesy call on Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Lanisha Rolle, at the Ministry, on November 13, 2019.  Also present at the courtesy call were Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture David Cates, Under Secretary Montez Williams; Director of Sports Timothy Munnings, Honourary Lifetime Member of the IAAF Pauline Davis-Thompson, Ken Wilson of the Sports Division, Co-Founder of Hoopfest Marvin Henfield and Director of Event Planning Wilton Russell.

The basketball standout, who is listed as being about 6'6" in height, invited Minister Rolle to attend Hoopfest as her special guest.  The International Youth Education & Sports (iYes) Foundation in partnership with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism is presenting the inaugural 'Bahamas Hoopfest,' November 27-30, 2019 at Baha Mar.  Bahamas Hoopfest will bring together over 250 young Bahamian girls and five National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women’s basketball teams from across the United States for a time of, according to organizers, "competition, celebrating the Bahamian culture, and women’s empowerment."

The organizers noted that the occasion marks the first time that young women, who participate at the highest level of collegiate basketball in the world, will compete in Nassau, Bahamas, during Thanksgiving week, with the goal of making it an annual event that is used to empower young Bahamian girls who want to someday receive a college education.  (BIS Photos / Eric Rose)
