NASSAU, The Bahamas - The Straw Market Authority recognized their long- serving vendors who are products of the market, affectionately known as ‘cupboard babies’ because the cupboard was their crib at the Straw Market.

Chairman of the Straw Market Authority Kevin Simmons, October 1, told the awardees: "I am truly proud to be associated with these pioneers of Bahamian tourism and I am grateful to serve. As leaders and seniors in the straw and craft industry, you have the power to influence. Please encourage the younger generation of vendors to build on your legacy, as the reward can be fulfilling."

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works & Urban Development the Hon. Philip Davis gave remarks at the 3rd Annual Vendors Appreciation and Recognition Ceremony at the Downtown Straw Market, held at Woodes Rogers Wharf. Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, Governor General, was also present at the ceremony for the vendors.

The Prime Minister said: "This celebration has taken on the feel of an annual event and the programme of activities reflects the full and complete involvement of all persons who have made their living through the creation and production of items which are sold to the thousands of visitors and others who frequent our markets on an annual basis.

"The valuable service provided by vendors and other artisans is not only for their own financial benefit, but provides a glimpse to our visitors of the true Bahamas."

Deputy Prime Minister Philip Davis added that the straw vending industry yielded many entrepreneurs with opportunities to create and sell their crafts and visual arts products.

"Straw vendors of old created 100 percent Bahamian-made products, and with them managed to educate and raise powerful adult children in the persons of Franklyn Wilson, Melanie Griffin, Elliston Rahming, Wendy Craigg, and so many others. Those pioneers in the straw industry demonstrated that vast talent exists among us with lucrative results," said Deputy Prime Minister Davis.

The 2015 Honourees are: Sylvia Wallace, Gloria Pitter, Dianna Hepburn, Netelene Strachan, Cetella Rolle, Hazel Andrews, Lorana Rolle, Frederica Minus, Emily Munnings, Martha Fife, Jacqueline Percentie, Rosalee Minus, Alvana Gay, Emilie Rolle, Princess Styles, Effie Rolle, Violamae Thompson, Monica Russell, and Mizpah Young.
