“The future of Grand Bahama is in you,” he told the young people present. He said, “From what I see out here today, your future is secure, bright and fantastic. Don’t let anyone tell you different.” Minister Johnson also gave these encouraging words, “The future is now. Take action now, do what you need to do, love your God, love your family and we are ready to roll now.”

Dr. Johnson acknowledged the presence of Bishop Michael Eldon School’s Head Girl, Joanna Evans for nine As in BGCSE, 9 medals at Carifta and 1900 on her SATs. He said that Joanna was an example of success. Grand Bahamian s, he said, are a humble people and will therefore go far.

Mrs. Edgecombe told the young people, advisers and parents present that it was a pleasure seeing so many young people showing up to make the statement that they are good young people who will make a brighter future tomorrow for all.

She further stated, “Young people, your presence here this afternoon, says to the nation that all is not lost. You are in the majority of young persons who are prepared to work hard, to show respect for law and order to play your role in building this nation.”

Today, she continued, young people are combating social ills such as murder, robberies, suicide, drugs and teen pregnancy, along with high school drop outs and unemployment. “This is not the case for all of the young people.” There are people who are doing well and those who are being celebrated.

“You are our hope, you are our future.” Mrs. Edgecombe told the young people that they are the ones who stand out as the brightest and best.
