FREEPORT, Bahamas – The Bahamas has once again made a name for itself on the world stage after hosting the first Regenera Global Conference in Grand Bahama designed to define current and future trends in the field of Regenerative Medicine.

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Honourable Dr. Michael Darville expressed his firm belief that Grand Bahama has the ability to attract scientists and medical professionals to establish research institutions and medical centres that will fuel growth in the island’s local economy through medical tourism.

The one-of-a-kind conference, which was held June 23-25, 2016, was born out of a partnership between Okyanos Cell Therapy, a Freeport-based research facility, and Regenera Global, a bio-technology firm, The Bahamas Government and the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

“In conjunction with our partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, we have moved forward with a bold and aggressive plan to market the island of Grand Bahama as a prime destination for medical tourism and with our partnership with the Grand Bahama Port Authority, we are working to strengthen the economy of Grand Bahama through foreign direct investment as it relates to stem cell research and treatment,” Minister Darville said.

The forum was held under the theme, “Regenerative Medicine 2.0: Redefining the Practice,” at the Grand Lucayan Resort and attracted over 100 leading medical practitioners, scientists and researchers. Regenera Global Conference was staged just a few short years after the Bahamas Government sanctioned the opening of Okyanos.

Minister Darville revealed that since 2012, government sought to redefine the practice of healthcare in The Bahamas and has embraced the idea of establishing a highly respected world-class jurisdiction for medical tourism and leader in the regional stem cell research and therapies.

The Government’s findings, he said, confirmed that with proper monitoring and regulations, The Bahamas in stem cell research and therapies would not only find itself on the cutting edge of science and technology, but this science would open the door in therapies that could possibly cure many of the chronic debilitating diseases that currently affect our population.

As part of the revitalization of Grand Bahama, Government has led the way in championing the Stem Cell Research Bill and stood on the right side of history and now the island of Grand Bahama can boast of a multi-million dollar stem cell therapy and research centre which has created many high-paying jobs for the Bahamian people while at the same time offering these potential therapies to both local and international clients.
