FREEPORT, THE BAHAMAS - Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. recently made a generous donation of $18,000 to the Bahamas Red Cross Society Grand Bahama Centre to keep its charitable Meals on Wheels programme rolling. The multinational automotive company made the contribution following a silent auction for a bespoke F-PACE sketch, drawn and signed by Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum.

Through Meals on Wheels, local Red Cross volunteers deliver food and other essential supplies to residents in vulnerable and isolated communities, particularly those who are physically unable to prepare meals for themselves.

The donation marks the first time Jaguar Land Rover has offered assistance to Grand Bahama's arm of the Bahamas Red Cross Society, however the automotive company has an extensive relationship with the international humanitarian organisation.

According to a statement released by the company, "Land Rover's long standing relationship with the Red Cross dates back to 1954, when a donated Defender was first used as a mobile dispensary in Dubai. Today, the partnership operates in 24 countries, supporting 17 humanitarian projects, including improving water and sanitation, health and social care programmes and disaster planning. It forms a huge part of Jaguar Land Rover's commitment to being a socially responsible business."

Jaguar Land Rover's donation to the Bahamas Red Cross Society Grand Bahama Centre is in addition to the company's five-year, $21.5 million partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - a commitment that aims to benefit thousands of people around the world.

Locally, the donation will enable Red Cross volunteers to provide even greater assistance to residents dependent on the Meals on Wheels programme. Bahamas Red Cross Society Director General Caroline Turnquest said the non-profit organisation is always seeking assistance and this recent donation helps lighten the burden.

"In Grand Bahama, we feed an average of 63 persons per day," Ms Turnquest said. "The expenses to run this particular programme are ongoing, so we're constantly having to purchase food to cook and to create the parcels we hand out to persons who walk in to us. In Grand Bahama, donations have been down for a few years due to the downturn in the economy, so the donation is very timely and very needed."

Ms Turnquest added that the donation would enable the centre to purchase the necessary food items in bulk and help them to better serve those residents with special diets.

Jaguar Land Rover's innovation-led Global Corporate Social Responsibility Programme aims to create opportunities for 12 million people by 2020, reflecting the increasing scale and scope of the business and its commitment to making a wider contribution to society.
