has once again selected Bahamians to canvas their opinions on highlights of The Bahamas over the year 2014, as well as ask about the direction of the country. Their comments will be shared over the coming weeks.

Through this exchange we hope to also highlight Bahamians in our community, and share their personal triumphs, that may or may not have made the news.

Here is the opinion of Pamela Burnside:

Who passed away this year that you feel will be 'most missed' and why? / Who was the 'most inspirational / influential Bahamian' in 2014 and why?

Dr Myles Munroe’s tragic demise garnered national and international coverage because of his inspirational and influential reach around the world. Because of the firm foundation he established through the institutions he established, his succession plans, teachings and his many books, his legacy can continue.

What were some of the hottest topics for The Bahamas in 2014?

Unfortunately they were all politics-based…..delayed gender equality referendum, VAT, crime, constant political fiascoes, illegal migration, carnival, number houses legislation, economic woes……do you think that we can get beyond mostly ‘politics-generated’ news topics  for 2015? Lawlessness reigns – the innocent suffer for the guilty and the guilty go free……it seems to be more beneficial to be dishonest which can’t be right – The criminals reign supreme and we are a lawless society. That is not a healthy formula for growth. Government and the opposition both need to work TOWARDS THE COMMON GOOD – the wellbeing of the Bahamian people should be the focus of all avenues!

What was the toughest problem faced in 2014. How do we find solutions to correcting it in 2015?

Crime. More serious research needs to be carried out from a social and psychological perspective in order to examine and correct the root causes of the situation, alongside crime fighting strategies, rather than trying to ‘band-aid’ the problem after the fact. Guns are a huge problem. The legal system and the courts have to step up their game. Crime fighting strategies need to multifaceted and all of the components and proponents should be working and dialoguing TOGETHER rather than operating in their own vacuum

Do you have a personal highlight from 2014?

My personal highlight would be the amazing achievement by our community organization, Creative Nassau that was founded by my late husband, Jackson Burnside, in obtaining the official designation from UNESCO on December 1 for Nassau to become a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Crafts and Folk Arts www.creativenassau.com! This is a huge accomplishment which has significant positive potential for the country by focusing on the Creative Economy as a third pillar of growth.

Pam Burnside graduated from McMaster University in Canada with a B.A. Degree in English and subsequently earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion and Textile from St Martin’s School of Art in London, England.
In 1978 she and her late husband, Jackson Burnside III established Doongalik Studios a creative design entity to promote local artistic talent. Pam presently manages the Doongalik Studios Art Gallery on Village Road, Nassau which showcases and promotes the work of local artists as well as being a centre for the creative arts. Pam is the Co-Founder of Creative Nassau, a non-profit community organization that formed to ‘celebrate and promote Bahamian Art Culture and heritage from the inside out’ based on the country’s vibrant Junkanoo Festival traditions and its straw work industry.
