WASHINGTON, D.C. - His Excellency Dr. Eugene Newry, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States, signed the Book of Condolences at the Embassy of Cuba, 2630 16th Street, N.W., on Monday, November 28, 2016, for former President of Cuba Fidel Castro, who died on Friday, November 25, at the age of 90. Castro had ruled the Caribbean Island nation since the 1959 revolution, but because of failing health turned over the reins to his younger brother Raul, who became President in 2008.

The Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration on November 26 extended condolences to the Government and people of Cuba on behalf of the Government of The Bahamas, noting that The Bahamas and Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1974, and throughout that time President Castro was a strong friend and ally. Ambassador Newry is pictured signing the Book of Condolences as Miss Krissy Hanna (right), Second Secretary, Embassy of The Bahamas, and Miss Tracee Dorestant, Second Secretary, Embassy of The Bahamas, look on.

Miss Hanna served as a Bahamas Diplomatic Officer at the Bahamas Embassy in Havana from 2009 to 2010 and Miss Dorestant likewise served as a Diplomatic Officer at Embassy in Cuba from 2010 to 2011.
