It is with deep regret and sadness that I extend condolences to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica on the loss of over 20 lives in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erika.

As a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, our countries are tied historically, geographically, culturally and politically.  To that end, we distinctly recognize that we as members of the Caribbean Community are not merely neighbors, but in the realm of family. Therefore, when Dominica hurts, The Bahamas is left in tears.

As Leader of the Free National Movement, the Official Opposition Party in The Bahamas, I join our Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie and by extension the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in expressing heartfelt sympathies from our people to yours,  during this very difficult time.

Indeed, it was only by God’s grace that we were spared from the wrath of Tropical Storm Erica that at one point was forecasted to impact The Bahamas chain of islands.  Hence, we do not take for granted that we could have been in a similar position that your country is facing today, therefore we earnestly empathize.

It is our hope that your nation will fully recover, and continue to build upon the foundation that your forefathers would have laid demonstrating triumph over every tragedy.

We sincerely wish the people of Dominica all the best, and God speed in your rebuilding efforts.
