Bahamian Diplomats meet with US Congresswoman Robin Kelly

Washington, D.C - Diplomatic representatives of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas held an introductory bilateral meeting with the senior Illinois representative on the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs in Washington, D.C., December 7, 2017. The Honorable Robin L. Kelly (D-IL 2nd District) met with His Excellency, Sidney Collie, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States; Hon. Theo Neilly, Bahamas Consul General to Washington, DC; Mr. Chet Neymour, Deputy Chief of Mission, Bahamas Embassy; Hon. Michael C. Fountain, Bahamas Honorary Consul to Chicago and Ms. Janine Gibson, Vice Consul, Washington, DC to discuss opportunities to strengthen the engagement between her office, the Midwest Jurisdiction and the Commonwealth.

The first Bahamas flag raising ceremony over Illinois soil took place in the Congresswoman's district and as a member of the United States House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Congresswoman Kelly engages debate and votes on matters of regional jurisdiction affecting The Bahamas such as political relations between the U.S. and the Commonwealth, disaster assistance, boundary issues and international claims. In her third term, the Congresswoman continues to execute her forward-thinking foreign policy vision for the U.S. and has been an outspoken proponent of diplomacy, international human rights and the need for clear and thoughtful American policy abroad.

Based upon her leadership in Illinois' 2nd District, the Congressional Black Caucus and the U.S. House, in addition to her current assignments, Ambassador Collie, Consul General Neilly, Deputy Chief Neymour and Honorary Consul Fountain all spoke to the various collaborative opportunities for the Congresswoman to partner with and positively impact The Bahamas. Their discussion centered on initiatives to promote investment, generate job growth, support agriculture, stimulate trade, develop innovative methods and share best practices to reduce gun violence, improve cyber-security, engage and integrate the Diaspora, strengthen IT-infrastructure, encourage new and emerging technologies and strategically plan to protect The Bahamas' reputation worldwide.

In order to create a progressive working agenda, the Congresswoman and the Bahamian Delegation agreed to ongoing discussions, follow-up meetings and jurisdictional visits.
