Vienna, Austria - IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano today delivered a statement to the Agency’s Board of Governors.

Mr Amano briefed Member States on nuclear verification and monitoring in Iran and the application of safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Mr Amano also discussed progress in the modernisation of the IAEA’s nuclear applications laboratories at Seibersdorf, outside Vienna, including the recent start of the installation of the Linear Accelerator at the Dosimetry Lab. He also cited recent efforts by the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture to help quickly diagnose and control outbreaks of animal and zoonotic diseases. In particular, he pointed to Mongolia, where it took FAO/IAEA experts only four days last January to diagnose and confirm an outbreak of African Swine Fever.

The Board, which meets five times a year at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, is one of the Agency’s main policy-making bodies.
