Miami, Florida - During a recent visit to Miami to participate in an annual pre-moot competition sponsored by the International Law Section of the Florida Bar, a group of law students from the Eugene Dupuch Law School in Nassau and their coaches paid a courtesy call on the Hon. H. Ricardo Treco, Bahamas Consul General to Miami, at the Bahamas Consulate offices in Miami.

The group consisted of five law students -- Rashied Edgecombe, Anya Allen, Glen Curry, Karine MacVean, and Donard Leslie Brown -- and two coaches: Cheryl Grant-Bethel and Darcel Smith-Williamson.

Also present during the March 3  courtesy call were three Bahamian Attorneys who reside and practice law in Florida: Donette Russell-Love, Chasity Strachan and Mia Martin.

The Eugene Dupuch Law School students were in Miami to participate in a competition facilitated by law offices of Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald. L.L.P., located at 1200 Brickell Avenue, that gives law student competitors an opportunity to practice before attending the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, Austria.

Recognized as one of the most prestigious international moot court competitions for law students in the world, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot has been held annually in Vienna since 1994, attracting more than 300 law schools from all around the world and spurring the creation of more than 20 pre-moots each year, similar to the one held in Miami, before the actual rounds are held in Vienna.

Nine schools participated on March 1 in the Miami pre-moot: The Bahamas, University of Georgia, Loyola (New Orleans), University of Florida, University of Miami, Florida State University, Nova Southeastern University, Florida International University, and Stetson.

“It was an all-day competition that started with the first round at 9 a.m.,” said Mariela M. Malfeld, Esq., an attorney with Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald, L.L.P. “The last round ended at 5 p.m.  The students were judged by a panel of three arbitrators.  The arbitrators are volunteers from the legal community and included former moot court participants, current arbitrators, former judges, and Judge Bailey of Miami’s International Arbitration Court – which exclusively handles matters arising out of international arbitration.”

The Bahamian laws students performed exceptionally well and received an Honorable Mention, advancing to the third and final round of the competition. Overall The Bahamian team, which was competing for the first time, came in second place.

During their courtesy call on Consul General Treco, the group was treated to a lunch at the Consulate offices, hosted by Consul General Treco, Deputy Consul General Sandra Carey, Vice Consul Tracee Dorrestant and the staff of the consulate.

“The Consulate in Miami was honored and extremely proud to have been witness to this dynamic and well prepared team of young Bahamian law students during the competition,” Consul General Treco said. “We also would like to commend the coaches, Cheryl Bethell and Darcel Smith-Williamson, who obviously had the team well prepared.”
