National experts in heart and stroke disease converge on Miami Beach for the 12th Annual Cardiovascular Disease Prevention International Symposium Feb. 6-9

MIAMI, Fla. – The 12th Annual Cardiovascular Disease Prevention International Symposium set for Feb. 6-9 in Miami Beach is bringing together many of the national experts who are influencing cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment today to talk about hot topics in heart attack and stroke prevention.
“The Who’s Who in cardiovascular disease will be here for the four-day meeting to present a range of issues, including some that are controversial such as the new cholesterol guidelines, coronary artery calcium scoring and the polypill under study. Each guest speaker is at the top of their field, having published 20 to 30 papers on their subjects,” said Arturo Fridman, M.D., medical director of Continuing Medical Education for Baptist Health South Florida, which is host of the symposium.
More topics rounding out the event include the challenge of identifying individual risk factors, the roles of mental health and exercise as well as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, diet, women’s risk, post-cardiac event rehabilitation, nutritional supplements and smoking.
Healthcare practitioners are invited to attend the meeting being held at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach.
“Heart attacks and strokes together are the No. 1 killer of men and women in the United States and throughout the world. The diseases are preventable, and it is our goal to educate about the importance of prevention,” Dr. Fridman said.
Baptist Health physicians on the program include:
- Arthur Agatston, M.D., author of the South Beach Diet books and medical director of wellness and prevention, will speak on both “The Truth About the Gluten Craze” and best risk assessment and management strategies.
- Theodore Feldman, M.D., cardiologist and medical director of South Miami Heart Center, will talk on the obesity epidemic and medical intervention.
- Anthony Gonzalez, M.D., chief of surgery and minimally invasive and robotic surgery at Baptist Hospital of Miami, will talk on the cardiovascular benefits of bariatric surgery.
- Khurram Nasir, M.D., on his latest research in a talk titled “Coronary Artery Calcification: Is It Time to Abandon Risk Factors for DVD Risk Assessment?”
- Michael Ozner, M.D., cardiologist and author of “Heart Attack Proof” will deliver the opening address on cardiovascular disease prevention.

- Valentin Fuster, M.D., of Mount Sinai Heart at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City: “The PolyPill: A Global Strategy to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk”
-Sharonne Hayes, M.D., on “Broken-hearted Women: Depression and Anxiety in Cardiovascular Disease” and current guidelines for risk reduction in women
- Darish Mozaffarian, M.D., of Harvard Medical School: “Chocolate and Health: Too Good to be True?” and “The Global Burden of Cardiovascular Mortality Due to Salt and Sugar Consumption”
- Neil Stone, M.D., of Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine and chair of the American Heart Association’s cholesterol guideline committee: “Critical Appraisal of New Cholesterol Guidelines to Reduce Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk”
