Washington D.C. - His Excellency Archil Gegeshidze, Ambassador of the Republic of Georgia to the United States and Non-resident Ambassador to The Bahamas, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr. Eugene Newry, Ambassador of The Bahamas to the United States, on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at the Embassy of The Bahamas, 2220 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.

Ambassador Gegeshidze stated that he was honoured to represent Georgia in The Bahamas, as The Bahamas forms part of a region with which the Georgian Government has particular interest. Within the global context, Ambassador Gegeshidze noted that small countries like The Bahamas had a unique role to play and that, through cooperation, such a role could be made more visible.

Alluding to the shared commonalities between countries, Ambassador Newry commented that countries, irrespective of their size, sought peaceful co-existence, self-sustainability and development.

During the meeting, Ambassador Gegeshidze took the opportunity to express gratitude to The Bahamas Government for its support of Georgia’s annual United Nations resolution on internally displaced persons in Georgia, and noted the need for the protection of the rights of such individuals from a humanitarian perspective.

With the forging of diplomatic ties between The Bahamas and Georgia three years ago, Ambassador Gegeshidze expressed the Georgian Government’s desire for the strengthening of relations between the two countries. He further noted that the Government of Georgia was open to all levels of engagement with the Government of The Bahamas, including business opportunities. To this end, Ambassador Newry advised of The Bahamas Government’s particular interest in areas such as commerce, trade and business development. He further stated that the Bahamas Government was open to all forms of bilateral relationships, notwithstanding geographic location.

The Bahamas and Georgia established diplomatic relations on May 13, 2011. Ambassador Gegeshidze presented credentials to H.E. Sir Arthur Foulkes as Non-resident Ambassador of Georgia to The Bahamas on April 24, 2014.
