The Bahamas-China Friendship Association (BCFA) expresses its deep concerns over the recent news reports and announcements that the initial time-frame set by the developers for the completion and opening of the Baha Mar Resort on Cable Beach has been missed and will now have to be extended, with a specific date.

We wish to go on record as attaching great importance to this multi-billion dollar investment and recognize its significant economic impact on The Bahamas once completed and opened. Our concern is to the general economic well-being of the country, as a whole; and for the setbacks that have been visited on this project.

Further, we are concerned for all the Bahamian investors who have secured shop and restaurant facilities in the stalled resort and for those hundreds of workers that have been sent home, with no degree of certainty when or if they will be called back to work.

Recognizing that everything is possible, BCFA president, Anthony Capron, said the Association “is fully behind the developers’ resolve to have the resort completed and opened in the shortest possible time.”

We join the developers in the belief that once the resort is opened and operational, it will be a world class destination that will attract guests from around the world and serve as a key economic spark plug for The Bahamas.

That is why the Association welcomes the signing of an Air Service Agreement (ASA) between The Bahamas and China in January 2015 and the more recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 28th May 2015 between the two countries which will provide for direct flights between China and The Bahamas . These two agreements signal important steps in the realization of the long term sustainability of Baha Mar as they provide the framework for thousands of Chinese and Asian visitors alike, to fly directly to The Bahamas not only to enjoy that resort, but also to enjoy what the country has to offer in terms of its culture and history.

We encourage the parties to resolve all outstanding issues as early as possible so that the Baha Mar resort can showcase to the world all that it has to offer and The Bahamas’s tourism brand could be introduced to Asia in a new and dynamic product offering.
