NASSAU, The Bahamas – The Bahamas Crisis Centre acknowledges that a cheque was delivered to its office by Member of Parliament for Tall Pines and Chairman of the Bahamas Electricity Corporation the Hon Leslie Miller.

While the Crisis Centre is encouraging men to become volunteers with the organization, it has confirmed that Mr. Miller, who has supported activities such as the annual fun/run walk, is not a spokesperson for the organization.

Meanwhile, the Crisis Centre is not in the position to accept Mr. Miller’s donation at this time. “We see this as a teachable moment for our nation. So often when a victim is battered, this explosion is followed by a “honeymoon period” which is to shower the victim with gifts, money, jewelry, flowers and other niceties,” said Crisis Centre Director Dr Sandra Dean-Patterson.

Although the Crisis Centre is a non-profit organization, which depends on donations from the public, the acceptance of this donation at this time would be contrary to the principles that guide our work on behalf of the victims of domestic violence.

“We would wish to invite members of the public who followed this issue and the public at large to log on to our website: www.bahamascrisiscentre.org to access information on domestic violence and join us in our fight to confront this vexing issue,’ Dr Patterson said.

The Bahamas Crisis Centre, which opened in 1982, is a non-profit, ideologically independent organization primarily pledged to respond to the needs of all victims of sexual, physical and psychological abuse.

The Centre also advocates for legislative and societal protection of survivors and raises public consciousness through education and information.
