Bimini, Bahamas – In a textbook example of a successful public/private partnership, the people of Bimini and the island’s leading corporate citizen Resorts World Bimini (RWB) are working hand in hand to give the island a much needed facelift.  Tons of debris from demolished abandoned buildings, derelict vehicles and dilapidated boats are being carted away from North Bimini as the Local Government Council and the Action Task Force Cleanup Committee work feverishly to tidy up and beautify the island.

The project – which has benefitted from the donation of a back hoe and dump truck from RWB, and the use of other heavy duty equipment from OPAC construction company - will take several days to complete.  Included in the ongoing scope of work is the leveling of invasive Casuarina trees from the island’s shoreline.

Chief council Robbie Smith says the goal of the cleanup campaign is to ensure that unsightly structures are no longer allowed to tarnish the image of the jewel that is Bimini.

“With all of this natural beauty around us, we have to become better stewards of what has been entrusted to us,” he said.  “We want Bimini to be known as the prettiest, cleanest, friendliest place in The Bahamas and this massive cleanup campaign is an important first step towards that.  We are grateful to Resorts World Bimini and OPAC for their assistance in making this happen.”

The massive cleanup effort is being complimented by a Most Beautiful House and Yard competition in which the island’s residents are being encouraged to beautify their surroundings for a chance to win prize money.
