Press Statement

Celebrating Heroes of the Bahamas

Monday 14th October, 2013 is National Heroes Day in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas; this is in keeping with legislation passed, unanimously in parliament, declaring the second Monday in every October National Heroes Day. Further, the month of October is to be observed as National Heroes/Bahamian History Month. Again, the National Heroes Committee thanks the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie for confirming this legislation with a proclamation.

Here are quotations from two of these proclamations. “whereas, the substantial development of a country depends on the vision, courage and valiant efforts of men and women who seek to implement social, economic and political changes for the betterment of its people……… The National Heroes Committee has planned to recognize and honour the noble sons and daughters of this country………the committee encourages the entire country to participate in activities within their various communities during the month of October and to observe and honour these individuals who have earned the title of National Heroes………..”

The National Heroes Committee encourages all Bahamians everywhere to make celebrations take place. We must not wait for the government; this is the people’s celebrations. The government will follow the people. The Heroes Committee salutes all persons and organizations who have already launched out in celebrations and will keep the same going throughout October. We urge the media houses to daily highlight names and deeds of valour done by those they consider heroes (our newspaper, radio and T.V. stations are urged to lead in this form of celebration). The Heroes Committee urges our people in all local communities to celebrate their heroes. Until the government sets up mechanism i.e. a Cultural Commission, our approach would be generic. We urge the people to say who they will celebrate.

We recognize the following celebrations known to us:

1) The Bain and Grants Town Development Association, led by Rev. Dr. C.B. Moss for their launch of their Heroes Week on Sunday 6th October at 3:00pm at Mission Baptist Church, Hay Street and the many activities planned in these communities.

2) The Fox Hill Old Scholars Association invites that community to St. Paul’s on Monday 14th at 11:00am to their Heroes Celebration in memory of Rev. Leroy Roker. There will be a church service, March and reception.

3) School assemblies in honour of heroes are urged throughout October but especially on Monday 7th October, 2013.

4) Wednesday 9th October 11:00am, there is a ceremony planned for the College of the Bahamas. The Prime Minister is to be invited to address the same. Students of COB are especially invited and to call in with suggestions.

5) An exhibition is being launched at the General Post Office. Please come forward with exhibits, pictures and write – ups on your heroes, for display. I urge you to come forward now.

6) Saturday 12th October, 2013. There is a Heroes March from Fort Charlotte to Rawson Square, where a celebration takes place. Items will be on sale.

Finally we urge all our people, on all our Islands to celebrate our heroes and establish traditions for years to come.

Blessings,

Rev. Canon S. Sebastian Campbell
National Heroes Committee Chairman
