Defence Headquarters, 16 SEPT. ‘20 (RBDF): The Royal Bahamas Defence Force has called off the search for missing boaters who went missing during a boating incident last weekend.
Commander William Sturrup, the RBDF’s Search and Rescue Coordinator shared that: “After some 4 days of canvassing an expansive area of waters around Chub Cay, and the Berry Islands, and based on wind and tide models, we have suspended Search and Rescue operations for the 5 persons reported missing at sea last weekend”. He said, “there were no signs of life or wreckage found during the helo overflights or vessel patrols in that area. The Defence Force is grateful to interagency partners and the United States Coast Guard for their support in this activity and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force remains poised to keeping Bahamian waters safe”.
Commander Sturrup expressed his thanks to the various agencies involved in the search.
The occupants were passengers aboard a 27-ft vessel that capsized on September 12th, 2020 in waters south of Chub Cay. Twelve persons were subsequently rescued and search efforts were conducted to find the remaining persons without success.
The Royal Bahamas Defence Force remains committed to protecting the territorial integrity of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
