Nassau, Bahamas - NAGB Film Series: Junkanoo, The Heartbeat of A People Produced by: Maria Govan and Erika M. Robinson Date: 7:00pm, Thursday, April 12th, 2012

“A must-see for anyone seeking to understand what Junkanoo is all about,” Nicky Kelly –The Tribune.

Junkanoo is a Bahamian festival that occurs during the dark hours of morning on the 26th of December and again bringing in its first hours of light on the first day of the new year. Thousands dance through Bay Street, Nassau’s town center, like a wild ocean of colour, while deep goat skin rhythms reverberate off the surrounding walls and cow bells chatter over the singing of brass horns. Through tapestry of interviews with a very diverse body of characters, the film explore Junkanoo’s historical, social, political, culture and spiritual impact on Bahamian life. The film follows the construction of costumes, highlighting five of the major groups that participate in the Junkanoo parade; The Saxons, The Roots, One Family, Barabbas and the Tribe and The Valley Boys. Join us on this journey and see through our eyes the magnificence and magic that is Junkanoo.
