Nassau, Bahamas - The NAGB presents the film "The Witches of Gambaga" Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 8.00pm.
Director Yaba Badoe will be our special guest this evening. She will discuss her film after the screening.
The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is proud to present the award-winning documentary The Witches of Gambaga. It is the extraordinary story of a community of women condemned to living in special villages separate from their communities after being accused of witchcraft by family and or neighbors in their home village. Usually the accusations were raised when a particular unexplained hardship visited the family or when a family member suddenly died.
Made over the course of 5 years, this disturbing expose is the product of a collaboration between members of the 100 strong community of ‘witches’ and women’s movement activists determined to end abusive practises and improve women’s lives in Africa. Painful experience and insight come together to create an intimate portrait of the lives of women ostracised by their communities. Told largely by the women themselves, their incredible stories and struggles are conveyed to a wide range of audiences by the director’s narration.
