Insurance Company Launches Virgin Pulse Campaign

Nassau, Bahamas – When’s the last time you saw a treadmill inside a restaurant . . . or some dumbbells for that matter?

If you were at the Graycliff Restaurant for Atlantic Medical Insurance’s recent launch of its Virgin Pulse campaign, chances are you did.

The insurance company exclusively partnered with global giant, Virgin Group to get Bahamians fit and healthy.

Scores of the company’s top clients turned out to the event to get a top to bottom health inspection. Throughout the evening, clients visited various health stations to get weighed, have their pressure taken, take part in fitness demonstrations and receive tips on how to live healthier lifestyles.

They also got to experience the Virgin Pulse Max™ – a personalised, wearable, water-resistant device that tracks physical activity such as daily steps, distance covered and calories burned. The device uses real-time analytics to motivate employees to stay fit and focused through reminders, updates and rewards promoting participation.

Annastasia Francis, director of operations at Atlantic Medical, said she was pleased with the recent launch and partnership with Virgin Group. She said she is eager for clients to experience Virgin Pulse.

She also noted that the medical insurance company had other corporate wellness programmes in the past, but they had their challenges.

“We found they didn’t give our clients exactly what they needed especially in the area of employee engagement and data analytics. This Virgin Pulse Programme offers our clients total corporate wellness, not just physical wellness but it encompasses spiritual, mental and social wellness. It’s total wellness and we’re extremely excited about the programme,” she said.

“We’ve enhanced a lot of the services included in our old programme, such as biometrics, the newsletter and physical challenges, and added new features such as quality of life challenges, social community and rewards.

“There are a lot of fun activities. We definitely expect our clients to embrace it. If you’re not into the gym, there are other physical challenges such as gardening. There’s something for everyone and we definitely encourage our clients to embrace it.”

Jemi Fitness and Wellness provided trainers at the event to promote fitness routines.

Virgin Pulse representative, Kerrin Conner, says she expects the Virgin Pulse programme to be just as successful in The Bahamas, if not more so, than it was in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.

“We’ve had great participation overall. Everyone is really engaging in the platform. It’s all really exciting,” she said.

According to Ms. Conner, the programme is offered to employees who are eligible to join. Once that is done, they get a device and establish a personal account.

Employees are then able to log in and track their steps and progress. The more activities you do, the more points you earn. In turn, those points allow employees to advance to different levels and earn rewards accordingly.

Holly Ferguson, an Atlantic Medical employee and client described the Virgin Pulse campaign as “exciting.”

She predicted that more companies would become involved in the near future.

“At Atlantic Medical, the employees, [including] myself . . . are signing on and giving one another a challenge. One of my colleagues would say I’m going to challenge you to take the stairs every day for the rest of the month and I’d say I’m going to challenge you to drink water for a month. When I come to work I make sure that she has a gallon of water on her desk and encourage her to take in her daily requirement of water that she needs for the day,” she said.

Ms. Ferguson also noted that the programme has brought out her competitive side, particularly when it comes to using the device to monitor her steps.

“So, if you’re walking and you say, ‘I’ve made 1,000 steps’ a colleague would say, ‘Gee, well, that’s nothing, I made about 2,500’ and that [starts the] competition all over again,” she said.
