Nassau, Bahamas - The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has taken note of the recent escalation of disputes among the executives of the Bahamas Union of Teachers (B.U.T.) and the fact that it has become a legal issue. During the past month, Ministry officials and the B.U.T. executive team headed by Zane Lightbourne have made significant strides and have concluded the Substantive part of the Bargaining Agreement.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has also made a financial proposal with the aim of bringing that to a conclusion in short order. However, due to the impending legal battle and the matter before the courts, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has decided to suspend negotiations on the Collective Bargaining Agreement until the legal matter is resolved.

Additionally, the Collective Bargaining Agreement dictates that the Secretary General of the Bahamas Union of Teachers is the individual authorized to communicate and conduct business on behalf of the B.U.T. with respect to the present Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology reaffirms that it will continue to have discussion with the Secretary General with matters affecting the membership under the present agreement. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology will continue to keep a close eye on this situation to ensure that the best interest of the B.U.T. members is upheld.
