UB Academic Senate Elects Chairman and Secretary

Assistant Professor of Business, Ms. Bernadette Robins, and Associate Professor and Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Maria Oriakhi, have been elected Chairman and Secretary respectively of the Academic Senate of University of The Bahamas (UB).

A key organ of shared governance, UB’s Academic Senate is subject to the powers of the Board of Trustees, the academic authority of the institution. It comprises representation from among faculty, staff, students and administrators.
Elections for the two positions were held on Monday, 1st October. Forty-one (41) of forty-four (44) Senators, eligible to vote, cast their ballots in the election.

Employed at UB since 2005 as a faculty member in the School of Business, Ms. Robins has served on a number of faculty boards and has been a member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Personnel Review and Assessment Committee. She earned a Master of Arts (MA) in Business from New York University, New York, USA, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Business Management from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minnesota, USA, an Associate of Arts (AA) in Secretarial Studies from The College of The Bahamas and a Diploma in Pre-Medical Laboratory Technology from Lambton College of Applied Arts & Technology, Ontario, Canada. Her research activities have focused on organizational self-assessments, economics and customer service improvement. Ms. Robins is a member of the National Business Education Association, Association for Research in Business Education, International Society for Business Education and Talent and Development (United States of America).

Actively involved in higher education for more than twenty years, Dr. Oriakhi has worked with institutions and students in The Bahamas, United States of America, Singapore, Canada and the United Kingdom. She has served as Chair of Mathematics, Physics and Technology, College Preparatory Coordinator and Coordinator of numerous Mathematics and Statistics courses. She has written a number of papers that have appeared in international peer reviewed journals as well as served as a peer reviewer. Dr. Oriakhi holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mathematics from the University of Georgia, Georgia, USA, a Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics from the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mathematics from Brunel University, London, UK.

UB's Academic Senate is enshrined in the UB Act, 2016. As the academic authority of the university, the Senate has responsibility for regulating and ensuring the quality of all academic programmes; maintaining the academic standards of the institution; approving recommendations for the operation and development of the University Libraries; reviewing the academic organization and development of the institution; reviewing the duties of all faculty; recommending to the Board appropriate provision for the personal development and well-being of students; and regulating and superintending the education of students as prescribed in the Statutes.
