Animal advocate and BeKind.org founder Frances Hayward hosted a dinner party at Grey Gardens for Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States. Frances was accompanied by her rescued shepherd Amigo and his trainer Bill Grimmer. They were joined by more than 100 animal lovers.
Guests roamed the famous property which was the basis for the Maysles’ documentary and the Tony Award-winning musical about the lives of its earlier inhabitants, Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie Beale. The property is now owned by Sally and Ben Bradlee although Mrs. Hayward leases it for much of the year.
Frances Hayward founded the BeKind Organization (www.bekind.org) to help raise awareness and funds for animals in need. The inspiration for this charity came from Amigo, a former stray “potcake” from Grand Bahama Island whom Frances rescued when he was three months old and already starving and diseased. Rehabilitated and nurtured, he became a “star” when the Humane Society of Grand Bahama used him as its poster dog, and ultimately became the face of the Bahamian “potcake.”
