Premier Cox of Bermuda to be honoured as the 2011 Regional Woman of the Year at the Women's Empowerment Summit

Nassau Bahamas – Oyster Publications (Bahamas) Limited today announced Premier Paula A. Cox JP, MP, of Bermuda as the recipient of its 2011 Regional Woman of The Year Award. The award will be presented to Premier Cox during the Women's Empowerment Summit 2011, at the Power Awards Luncheon on April 27, at Atlantis, (Paradise Island) Nassau, Bahamas.

The Women's Empowerment Summit, themed “Embrace Your Power”, is a full day conference hosted by Oyster Publications featuring key segments of thought leadership training and motivational activities provided by top women and male leaders reflecting a diversity of backgrounds. Summit speakers and event program will focus on the best in class global practices and tributes highlighted by a signature luncheon presented in partnership with Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) showcasing gender diversity and honoring, the Honourable Paula A. Cox, Premier of Bermuda and Minister of Finance, a Bahamian Business Leader and a Female Youth Leader. The summit culminates with a play by Michael Pintard on Thursday evening, entitled “Women Talk.”

This event is the Third Annual Women's Empowerment Summit hosted by Oyster Publications and is intended to provide information and resources that support national partnerships, stimulate intellectual and life changing dialogue, develop future industry leaders, and promote The Bahamas as a world class
business services centre. “Our goal this year is to bring more than 400 diverse and distinguished women and (50) young girls together in collaboration withthe support f the U.S. Embassy Nassau, Bahamas for the further development of comprehensive programmes and services that help advance women's issues and more importantly, contribute to the overall development of the Bahamas and the Caribbean region,” says Portia Harrigan, Managing Director of Oyster Publications (Bahamas) Limited. She adds, “It is important, that as we move forward, that we prepare ourselves, the entire community - men, women and children to function efficiently and effectively if we are to remain competitive in this evolving global economy.”

The Regional Woman of The Year Award is presented to a woman from the Caribbean region who has made significant and demonstrable contributions to her community throughout her career. She is at the top professionally and shows great resolve to help others along their path.

About Paula A. Cox
The Honourable Paula A. Cox became Premier of Bermuda in October of 2010. She first served the people of Bermuda as an Opposition Member of Parliament when elected in 1996, and was one of the youngest female members of the House of Assembly. Premier Cox’s Ministerial appointments over the past fifteen years have given her broad experience across government. Found in each of her portfolios are groundbreaking achievements with resulting benefits for Bermuda and its people. As Minister of Labour and Immigration, Premier Cox introduced the island’s Term Limits Legislation. As Minister of Education she launched the Bermuda Education Strategic Team (B.E.S.T.) Initiative that laid the groundwork for best practices in education. Administering the portfolio of Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Cox introduced The Proceeds of Crime Regulations – (Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing) for financial institutions. As the former and now current Minister of Finance, Premier Cox championed the formation of Bermuda's first Economic Empowerment Zones that encourage entrepreneurship and aid with financial education, support and tax relief for small businesses.

In her first 100 Days in office, Premier Cox realigned Government ministries into a needs-driven framework and she continues to uphold Bermuda’s credibility across the globe. Under her guidance Bermuda has signed 23 Tax Information Exchange Agreements (TIEA) with countries internationally and this year Bermuda will host the OECD Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of
Information for Tax Purposes with representatives from approximately 97 countries.

In the private sector Ms. Cox was Vice President and Senior Counsel at numerous companies such as ACE Limited and the Bank of Bermuda Limited. She has been named one of “the most effective politicians” in Bermuda by The Bermudian Magazine. Oyster Publications (Bahamas) Ltd. commends the Honourable Premier Paula A.
