The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) in collaboration with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Internet Society (ISOC) and the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) will host an ICT Roadshow at the British Colonial Hilton, Monday and Tuesday 3rd and 4th, June 2019. The theme for this event is "Strengthening the Local Internet – Security, Resilience, Convergence".

A clear understanding of how the Internet economy works is first needed before we can fully embrace the innovation and benefits of internet-enabled technologies and use them to create effective solutions to common development challenges. The event will also highlight practical approaches to encourage and support development of more Internet-enabled local applications and services.

The upcoming workshop will bring together community, private sector, academia and government representatives to discuss critical questions around the steps necessary to develop a robust, resilient and vibrant local Internet economy with a focus on issues such as cybersecurity, critical internet infrastructure, Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), number portability and Over the Top (OTT) services.

It will also offer attendees insightful views of the issues, threats and opportunities surrounding use of the internet for economic and social empowerment. It will promote awareness of approaches and practical strategies to equip attendees to be more effective in the following areas:

  •     Critical Internet Infrastructure Development: Ensure that local infrastructure effectively supports digital agenda
  •     Cyber Security: Encourage implementation of best practices for safeguarding local networks and online services
  •     Enabling Telecommunications Policy: Protecting consumers, increasing service options, and facilitating local innovation.
URCA recently published its Public Consultation on the proposed Framework for the Establishment of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in The Bahamas (ECS 07/2019). The purpose of this document is to:
  •     to promote public awareness of the contributions that IXPs can make to the development of the Internet and digital economy in The Bahamas;
  •     to alert potential IXP users of URCA’s proposals and recommendations; and
  •     ensure the regulatory framework is favorable for IXPs in The Bahamas to operate successfully.
By attending this workshop you will also have an opportunity to engage with URCA’s representatives for further consultation on the document as well as hear from those who have successfully launched IXPs, regionally and internationally.

It is hoped that the hosting of the workshop at this time will help direct the way forward for stimulating the entry of IXPs in the Bahamian market.
