Fort Lauderdale, Fla – Senior relief pitcher Sean Albury (Nassau, Bahamas) received Preseason National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-South Region honors, as announced by the NCBWA Thursday.

Albury returns after a breakout junior season in which he received NCBWA and American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Second-Team All-American honors. He was also named to the first-team All-Sunshine State Conference for leading the Sharks with 10 saves, ranking 10th in the nation. Albury allowed just two runs in 23 and one-third innings pitched for a 0.77 earned run average. He struck out 37 batters and limited the opposition to just a .134 batting average.

Albury will be returning to a team that will feature 14 other seniors. Last season the Sharks went 35-21 overall, marking the fifth straight year in which they won at least 30 games. This will be the first season under new head coach Greg Brown.

The Sharks received seven votes in the NCBWA Preseason South Region Poll, one vote short of placing in the top-10. Tampa, who has won the SSC title in four of the past five years, was tabbed as the preseason favorite to come out of the South Region. Florida Southern (4th), Florida Tech (6th), Rollins (8th) and Barry (9th) were the other SSC selections in the top-10.

NSU will begin its season this Tuesday, Feb. 1 at the NSU Baseball Complex in a game against Northwood at 6 p.m.

The Nova Southeastern baseball team (1-0) started its 2011 season on a high note by defeating the Northwood Seahawks (0-1), 2-1 Tuesday night at the NSU Baseball Complex. The victory was the first for new head coach Greg Brown, who took the position this past June.

The Sharks looked well on their way towards an opening day victory as preseason All-South Region selection Sean Albury (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas) entered the game in the ninth inning and struck out his first two batters. Northwood went out swinging as the Seahawks picked up back-to-back hits and drove in one run. With the tying run on second base, Albury picked up his first save of the season by striking out Northwood’s Dan Heskin.

Despite the one run difference, the Sharks outhit the Seahawks 9-2 until Northwood’s near comeback in the ninth inning. The Sharks left nine runners on base, including at least one in innings two through six.
