Bahamas Baseball Federation congratulates y oung Bahamian standout (DESMOND RUSSELL), Freeport, Grand Bahama on his pitching shut-out performance against Division 1 Alabama State University in Conference play.

A Quote from Tournament Organizer of The World Baseball Challenge - Jim Swanson - Co-Chair, WBC from the 2009 Tournament:

"Bahamas put up its best showing in a game against the powerhouse USA Baseball. Bahamas lost that game 8-1, but gritty right-handed pitcher Desmond Russell gave up just four hits and had his team within one run, trailing 2-1, in the seventh inning, putting a scare into the mighty Americans. Russell gave up just two earned runs in one of the best pitching performances in the tournament "

JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY:

JSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader Conference Action with Alabama State

The Tigers blanked the Hornets, 8-0, in game two as freshman Desmond Russell threw a complete shutout

March 6, 2011

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jackson State University split its first conference series with Alabama State University, Sunday afternoon when they fell, 4-3, in game one but won game two, 8-0. The Tigers improve to 3-6 on the year, and 1-1 in conference action.

In game one, the Hornets did not register a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning as junior starter Quintavious Drains held the Hornets bats silent. With a lead off infield single, and later a two-run homer, the Hornets took a 3-1 lead at the end of the sixth inning.

JSU was able to push across single runs in the seventh and eighth inning to even the score at three, but that would not be enough as the Hornets added one more run to ninth to take the game 4-3.

The ASU pitching staff allowed six hits and the three runs, while freshman Jose Garcia (0-1) took the loss the Tigers, giving up one run in relief of Drains, who finished with 10 strikeouts.

Game two for the Tigers was all about freshman hurler Desmond Russell (2-1) who went the distance in a complete game shutout. He only allowed five hits and tallied 14 strikeouts in the victory.

Junior Frank Solis led the Tigers with three hits, while sophomore Charles Epperson and Russell had two hits, respectively.

Jackson State will be back in action on Monday, March 6 at 1 p.m., when they host Concordia-Alabama.
