Miami, FL  – The Bahamas National Beach Soccer Team will face Jamaica, Belize and Guyana at the upcoming regional beach soccer World Cup qualifier event set to kickoff on February 20 in Nassau.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW) today conducted the draw for the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship Bahamas 2017, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Doral, Florida, USA.

The draw, which determined the groups and match schedule for the tournament, was opened with welcoming remarks from Philippe Moggio, CONCACAF General Secretary and Anton Sealey, President of the Bahamas Football Association (BFA). The event was conducted with the assistance of Bahamas National Team players Gavin Christie and Leslie St. Fleur.

“Hosting a FIFA World Cup is both an honor and a privilege, but it is also an extraordinary opportunity to develop talent and encourage greater participation among our youth. These major events provide a platform to continue building a stronger and more passionate fan base.  We are eager to welcome fans and visitors from around the world so that they can experience the hospitality of The Bahamas. I look forward to seeing thousands of visitors in Nassau in February and then again in April when we welcome the world to the pristine shores of Nassau, Bahamas,” Sealy said.

Tournament host Bahamas, who was seeded into Group A will face Jamaica, Belize and Guyana. In Group B, defending CONCACAF Beach Soccer champion Mexico was joined by Guatemala, Canada and Guadeloupe, while United States, Trinidad & Tobago, Antigua & Barbuda and US Virgin Islands make up Group C. El Salvador will be in Group D with Costa Rica, Panama and Turks & Caicos Islands.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to not just play in but host this tournament once again. Then to follow that up with hosting and playing in the World Cup, we are excited and The Bahamas will be ready,” said Bahamas Beach Soccer National Team Captain Gavin Christie.

“I’m very excited. Bahamas versus Jamaica is always an exciting match up. We have two new teams that we haven’t played before so I look forward to the challenge of this year’s CONCACAF Qualifiers,” added Bahamas Beach Soccer National Team Member Lesley St. Fleur.

The Malcolm Park Beach Soccer Facility will host all group, quarter-final, semifinal, third place and final matches. The Local Organizing Committee will also use the qualifier as a trial run for the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup slated for April 27 to May 7.

The champion and the runner-up of the competition will join host Bahamas as the three CONCACAF representatives in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017. In case Bahamas (host of the World Cup) and/or Guadeloupe (Non-FIFA Member) reach the final match, the World Cup spot(s) will be allocated to the next best placed team(s).

In an effort to further develop Beach Soccer, each one of the sixteen participating Member Associations are guaranteed to play six games, with all competing for final tournament placement, until the last match date.

For the draw, the Participating Member Associations were separated into pots of four balls according to the Beach Soccer World Wide Ranking dated September 2016. The draw started by selecting from a separate pot, which contained the five teams with the same exact ranking (38). These teams were drawn and placed into Pots 3 and 4 respectively to complete the distribution of the teams into those Pots. The teams were then drawn into the four groups, from those final pots of four teams each.
