Bahamian wrestler, Thorn Demeritte, powered his way to a first place finish Sunday at the first Caribbean SuperWeek Beach Wrestling tournament in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Demeritte was one of two wrestlers competing in the event. Regine Neeley represented the Bahamas in the female heavyweight category, but competed only in exhibition matches. Meanwhile, Demeritte, in the 63k weight division, had dominant performances against two Barbadian wrestlers to capture gold. He got the best of Lemar Tull and Rashaad Maynard, winning both matches by the score of 3 – 0.

Caribbean SuperWeek is a development initiative conceived by United World Wrestling (UWW), the international federation for Olympic styles of wrestling. It was created to assist Caribbean countries in better preparing for international competition.

SuperWeek offered training for coaches, administrators, referees and athletes of Caribbean countries. It peaked with the beach wrestling tournament that featured wrestlers from the Bahamas, Barbados, Suriname, Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana and St. Lucia.
