Nassau, Bahamas - The sport of American Football is making a big comeback among the youth in the Bahamas and USA Football along with the Bahamas American Football Federation (BAFF) after the completion of the first football clinic are committed to making it possible for it to continue.

The Clinic was held on Monday December 22nd, 2014 3-5pm at the Roscoe L. Davies Field. It was part of activities leading up to the inaugural Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl on December 24th, 2014.

For many of the attendees at the clinic, boys and girls ages 7-13, this was their first experience with football so they were eager to learn as much as they could. As they took the field set-up with eight stations allowing for teams of 10-15 kids at each, USA Football Heads Up Football Master Trainer Chris Merritt, players from the Central Michigan Chippewas and the Western Kentucky HillToppers began teaching the art of protecting a football, running with it, proper football stances and running drills.

After each station’s instructions, the kids were then given the opportunity to put into practice what they had learned. You could hear them encouraging each other saying “don’t forget to hold the ball tight and in, remember to position your body properly before you throw and remember to follow through with your tackles”.

The opportunity to learn more about the sport of American Football had indeed been passed on to the first clinic attendees and it left many of them asking when the clinic was returning to the Bahamas so they could sign up again.

BAFF Directors out of Grand Bahama travelled to Nassau courtesy of the Ministry of Tourism for the clinic and were very pleased with the turnout of kids at the clinic. BAFF President, LaLisa Anthony, while addressing the kids said “the goal of BAFF was to not just have American Football played in Nassau but throughout the Islands of the Bahamas”. She added that “while football is a very exciting game to play, it is very important that kids learn how to play the game properly so as to avoid or minimize injuries therefore clinics and camps like these are very much needed”.

Not to be left out Ms. Anthony also said a special thank you to the youth football Coaches out of Nassau, and parents for allowing their kids to take part in this historic event.

As promised all kids who took part in the clinic received a free t-shirt and vouchers to attend the big Game.

The Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl Football Clinic was held in cooperation with the Bowl Organizers, USA Football and BAFF who according to International Federation of American Football (IFAF) is the official governing body for youth football in the Bahamas.

As for the big game, ESPN through its televised coverage brought millions of viewers to the Nassau, Bahamas as they watched the Conference USA Western Kentucky HillToppers reign triumphant over the Mid-American Conference Central Michigan Chippewas in a nail biting Rugby style passing finish with a final score of 49-48 at the first ever Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl.
