Freeport, Bahamas – The Grand Bahama Sailing Club is proud to be sending 4 sailors from our island to compete at the exclusive Star Sailors League Finals this weekend in Nassau. Qualifying in the Optimist Class we have Hugo Alnebeck who will enter the event ranked number 1 in the Bahamas and Jaheim Russell who qualified as a VIP. In the Laser Radial Class, Tai Moss and Michael Sanchez will be representing the GBSC, qualifying through their overall rankings for the year. The event itself is a compete by invitation only as it is also going to be attended by most of the top sailors in the world such as Robert Scheidt of Brazil and Diego Negri of Italy.

The main event started on Tuesday with 25 teams competing in the Star sailboat, with multiple Olympic gold medal holders chomping at the bit to get their hands on the Grand Prize of $100,000. The Star is previously an Olympic class boat but is still considered by the experts as a very fair boat to hold private regattas in. The Stars will race 11 races, between Tuesday and Friday, then the top 10 will race in 3 knockout races on Saturday to decide the overall champion. The Star Sailors League Finals have been taking place at the Nassau Yacht Club for the past 4 years, but this will be the first year the event will also have 2 youth classes racing for top honours.

For the Laser and Optimist classes they will have a similar schedule to the Stars, with a 3 race qualifier on Saturday, with the top 10 qualifying for the first of a 3 race knockout on Sunday.

The event will have worldwide media coverage and can be streamed live on http://finals.starsailors.com/

The Grand Bahama Sailing Club is celebrating 10 years of teaching youth a sport for life. For more information or to support the club please contact Director Ross Darmody at 727 SAIL or at rossgbsc@gmail.com.
