Nassau, Bahamas - Inner city children of the Baillou Hill Road, Garden Hills, and Yellow Elder communities got to experience two weeks of competition and fun as they honed their basketball skills at the annual D-Squad Basketball Camp.

The D-Squad Basketball Camp welcomes boys and girls ages five to 17 to join them each summer as they not only learn the rules of the sport, but foster overall character development in areas such as discipline, hard work, and community spirit. At the camp’s closing awards ceremony on Friday, coordinator and senior boys’ basketball coach Harcourt McCoy expressed the need for financial support for initiatives like this and made a special presentation to yearly sponsor Consolidated Water (Bahamas) Ltd. (CWCO).

CWCO representatives attended the camp’s final competition and closing ceremony to watch the young “athletes” display the skills they’ve learned over the past two weeks. They also helped present awards to the winners of various divisions.

The company’s Accounts Manager Welliya Cargill said, “CWCO is proud to donate to initiatives that give young people the opportunity to be productive and also have fun during the summer and that helps build their character. For us, the real prize is getting to be a part of the D-Squad’s closing ceremony every year and see the things these kids have learned and the comradery and spirit among them. We’re honoured to be a part of this event.”

Coach McCoy, whose own two daughters Tanielle and Sarah have been coming to the camp since they were one, said “The Bahamas needs more people who are willing to contribute to initiatives that benefit the youth. The D-Squad Basketball Camp is a non-profit organization that seeks to improve the basketball skills of anyone who is disciplined enough to come out and listen. It doesn’t matter what level they’re at. The goal is to help them become a better-rounded individual on the whole, so they can contribute to our communities and our country.

“Basketball is a great way to do that because you can’t be a good player without also being a team player and honing that sense of unity, along with discipline and hard work. We have an open door policy and take anywhere from 80 to 120 kids from public and private schools alike.”

He added, “We’ve been doing this for the last 12 years and are grateful for corporate stakeholders, like CWCO, that enable us to pay for the use of a facility and give the kids some refreshments during the day, because it is extremely hot and they work up a sweat. It’s also because of corporate sponsorship we’re able to award the kids, which is crucial for their overall encouragement. It means a lot to them when they can get a medal or a trophy as a token of their achievement and pushes them to do their absolute best.”
