Grand Bahama's Jonquel Jones given hero's welcome while visiting home for Junkanoo Jam

Believed to be only the third Bahamian to earn a Division I scholarship for women's basketball, the 6' 4" Jonquel Jones is home in Grand Bahama Island with her team from George Washington University to play in the NCAA Junkanoo Jam underway at St. George's High School in Freeport. She was greeted at the airport by family, friends and former coaches.

Jones and her team visited Hugh W. Campbell Primary School, where she previously attended. Their they interacted with the school children on the basketball court. The team gave our t-shirts and autographs. George Washington was hosted to a dinner put on by the Jones family and hosted at the home of former soccer coaches of Jones, Donnie and Mary Knowles. Jones was also a Bahamas national player in soccer, and the local league is cancelling their Saturday matches to attend and cheer on Jones at the Junkanoo Jam.

They also
visited Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy for the opening ceremony for the Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy 16th Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament. In attendance was the Right Hon. Perry Gladstone Christie, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Hon. Obediah Wilchombe, Minister of Tourism, Minister for Grand Bahama, and other government officials.

On Thursday night, in light of Thanksgiving, all the teams were hosted to dinner provided by the Grand Lucayan, their host accommodations.  During the evening, they enjoyed a colourful and musical Bahamian Junkanoo rushout.

Jones
led the Bahamas National Team to a 5th place at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Senior Championship in July, averaging 17.2 points and a tournament-best 14.0 rebounds in five games. She ranked 2nd in the tournament in scoring and 5th in blocked shots (1.4 bpg). She had a recorded 23 points, 27 rebounds, five blocks and four assists in a 70-69 overtime victory over heavily favored Dominican Republic.
