Joshua Greene takes 2016 National Sculling Championship Title

Freeport, Bahamas – With a full house on the shoreline, competitors from all over The Bahamas came together for the 2016 Nationals Sculling Championships held this year in Freeport.

The Grand Bahama 21st Annual Grand Bahama Regatta and Homecoming was the host for the championships on the Saturday July 23rd which made for a fun filled weekend, which included Junior Sailing Races, C Class Cup sloop sailing and much more.

The Bahamian Brewery & Beverage Company (BBB) started their celebrations on the Thursday with a Sculling boat parade throughout Grand Bahama, starting from their home brewery traveling to West End and back to Freeport. They also sponsored the kick of regatta Friday night welcome with a “Bahamian Brewery Block Party” at the Regatta Site at Taino Beach.

Saturday evening the sculling races began at 7pm on the Tanio Beach shoreline where hundreds gathered to watch these traditional races. The first part of the event was to find a Grand Bahama winner, to challenge for the National Championships.

After several heats William Gardiner was crowned the Grand Bahamas winner in the Sands Light skiff, Pedyson Baillou coming second in the Sands skiff and 3rd place going to Radcliff Miranda in the Strong Back boat.

“We were very pleased with the turn out today,” said Wellington Seymour, BBB Executive Sales & Marketing Manager “Grand Bahama had a strong turnout of scullers, and the support from local fans is always great to see.”

Immediately after the Grand Bahama winner was found, it was time for the National races, which featured sculling champions from across The Bahamas. Flown in just for the event, winners from these islands races included: Three-time champion Clayton Bain from the Andros race, national defending champion, Josh Greene from the Long Island race, Stephen Rolle from the Exuma race, Richard Ross from the Nassau race, Steven Gardiner from the Abaco race and then newly crowned winner William Gardiner from Grand Bahama.

With three heats held to get to the top four, the final race gave the Brewery a new champion with bragging rights for the year. Edging out his fellow competitors Josh Greene who hails from Andros took the win in the Sands Light skiff with Stephen Rolle from Exuma, taking second in the Sands skiff and Richard Ross from Nassau coming third in the Strong Back skiff.

Jimmy Sands President and CEO of Bahamian Brewery & Beverages Company Limited celebrated by saying “it’s always wonderful to help keep our island skills and traditions alive. He is very proud to help make these races happen. Congratulations to Josh and we look forward to more scullers challenging him in future competitions.”

Winners all take home trophies, cases of Sands beer and of course the pride in knowing they are the top scullers in The Bahamas.
